The character Hundun must be unlocked by defeating him in a Pandemonium-difficulty stage after beating the Chapter 5.

Completing all the Battle Objectives on Chaotic Difficulty for a character listed as Unique Weapon for that stage will unlock a powerful Unique Weapon for that character. Stages can be challenged on one of five difficulties Easy, Normal, Hard, Chaotic or Pandemonium. Ultimate stages prior to Chapter 6 will be marked with (Ultimate). Ultimate adds Chapters 6, 7 and the Final Chapter to the series as well as some Side Stories in existing chapters. Side Stories listed below will follow the Ultimate order and will be marked with a (SS). In Warriors Orochi 4: Ultimate, Side Stories are now listed at the bottom of their original chapter. In Warriors Orochi 4, Side Stories are listed together under a separate heading. The story starts with the three Tokugawa characters: Tadakatsu Honda, Naotora Ii and Naomasa Ii. However, as this game has no continuity with the other titles in the Warriors Orochi series, character interactions and allegiances are vastly different this time around. Like in Samurai Warriors 4, players are given a set of optional objectives to complete in order to earn bonus rewards achieving them is essential in order to acquire mystic weapons in the Chaotic difficulty setting.

Story Mode in Warriors Orochi 4 largely follows the same format set by the last installment: several story chapters and a separate section for side stories.
